美國人求婚之前的步驟與中國傳統上類似，都彼此到對方家里去征求家長的支持和同意。當然，美國家長和中國家長類似，也會有不同意的時候，但區別在于，如果是中國婚姻，家長的干預權可能更大一些，甚至拆散一對新人。但美國則不同，美國家長一般就是給予一些意見，無論同意與否，都不會主動干涉新人的決定。當然，如果你娶的是美國黑幫或富人家庭的女兒，有可能會直接被拒甚至勒令不能在一起，除非你們做好羅密歐與朱麗葉式愛情的準備。
