美國是個(gè)多語種國家，對(duì)外語的教學(xué)相當(dāng)重視。按規(guī)定，本科生必須修讀一門外語課程，否則拿不到學(xué)位。這個(gè)要求可苦了那些不喜歡語言的學(xué)生。他們定邊捧著課本背單詞，一邊抱怨；”I can’t for the life of me remember all these!”

每次聽到這句話，我總是會(huì)心一笑。想起以前在國內(nèi)當(dāng)家教的時(shí)候，很多被家長(zhǎng)逼著學(xué)英語的小孩兒也總是這抱怨：“找死我也記不住！”

兩種牢騷的意思完全一樣，但英語的表達(dá)方式巧妙地避開了“死”字，for the life of me的原形是for the life of me，意思是“（即使）以某人的生命（為代價(jià)）也……”。用白話解釋，說難聽點(diǎn)，就是“打死某人也.0…..”，　說好聽點(diǎn)，就是‘怎么也……“。除了最常用的for the life of me，還有for the life of you/him/her等等。舉幾個(gè)例子：

I can’t for the life of me understand why everybody is calling this “art”. It’s a bunch of crap, if you ask me! (我怎么也想不通為什么大家都說這是“藝術(shù)”。根本就是扯淡嘛！)

If you can’t for the life of you remember how to spell ‘refrigerator”, use “fridge” instead.（如果你死活也記不住refrigerator的拼法，改用fridge好了。）

注釋refriger和fridge都是‘冰箱’。

For the life of him, Jimmy just can’t comprehend why Sarah enjoys shopping that much. Likewise. Sarah for the life of her can’t understand why jimmy is so crazy about baseball.(Jimmy怎么也想不通為什么Sarah那么喜歡逛商店。同樣，Sarah怎么也不理解為Jimmy那么癡迷棒球。)

上面給出的例子分別是can’t undertstand\can’t remember和can’t comprehend，　由此不難發(fā)現(xiàn)：for the life of one專門用在否定句里。這其實(shí)很好理解，就像中文里的‘打死我也……“，　省略號(hào)表示的部分只能用否定，比如“記不住”，　“看不懂”或“想不通‘等等。

與can’t for the life of one do something類似的說法還有can’t do something to save oneself。　在這個(gè)上，又衍生出了一個(gè)比較滑稽的短語：can’t do something to save the world。這兩種說法翻譯成‘根本不會(huì)做某事’比“怎么也不會(huì)做某事‘更自然一些。比如：

Idf Julia is the host,we’d better bring a lot of food. She can’t cook to saveherself!（如果這次聚會(huì)是在Julia家的話，我們最好帶上大量食物。好像根本不懂得烹飪！）

Rob: This is the worst album I’ve heard in the past couple of years.(Rob:這是我近幾年來聽過的最爛的唱片。)

Jennifer;I totally agree! She can’t sing to save the world! (Jennifer: 完全同意！　她根本不會(huì)唱歌！)
