請求許可最直接的表達是Can I …?

Can I borrow your pen, please?請把你的筆借我好嗎？

Is it all right it…?也很直接：

Is it all right if I sit here?我坐這兒可以嗎？

使用May I…?或could I…?時，禮貌程度會比較高：

May I come in?我可以進來嗎？

Could I speak to your mother please? 我能和你母親說話嗎？

 

GRANTING & REFUSSING PERMISSION  同意或不同意

表示同意時，常用的有禮貌的表達方式如下所示：

Yes, of course.

Of course you can.

Go ahead.

Please do.

Be my guest.

表示不允許、不同意時，可用下面這些有禮貌　表達方式：

No, I’m sorry,

I’m afraid you can’t.

看看下面的對話：

Woman   Can I read this newspaper?

Man     Of course you can.

Woman   Could I take this chair?

Man     Please do.

Man     Is it all right I sit in this seat?

Woman  No, I’m sorry.

Man    Can I take this home?

DO YOU MIND IF…?  你介意……？

當你想做某事，　卻覺得這事可能會給對方帶來麻煩時，可以用Do you mind if…?這種請求許可的表達：

Do you mind if I open the window?你介意我打開窗戶嗎？

在條件時態里，Would you mind if…?會顯得更有禮貌：

Would you mind if I smoked?你介意我抽煙嗎？Do you mind …?和Would you mind…?這兩個表示許可的句子直接翻譯的話，是“你介意……嗎？”也就是問“你討厭嗎？”因此，如果你想回答“不介意”、“不討厭”，　即給予對方許可時.必須說No。反過來，表示“討厭”、“介意”時，就必須用Yes.

表示“討厭”時最有禮貌的說法就是：

I’d rather you didn’t.

要表示非常“介意”時，可以說：

Yes, I do mind.

Yes, I would mind.
