HE PASSIVE OF MOODAL VERBS
can, must may, might等情態(tài)動詞也常用被動語態(tài)。下面的會話里有幾個這樣的例子：
Woman This room has to be painted.
Man When does it have to be done?
Woman it must be done today or tomorrow.
Man It can’t be done today because. Two of our painters are away.
Woman If the work is started tomorrow, when will it be finished?
Man It might bvew finished tomorrow.
Woman That would be great.
MULTI-WORD VERBS: WITH ‘IN’ in的短語動詞
上個單元我們學了in和out在空間上的基本意思以及它們和動詞搭配后的延伸意思。本單元里，我們繼續(xù)掌握其比喻、慣用的意思。
動詞和in組成的詞組里有的很理解。這時，in 前面的動詞常用其原來的意思。
believe in Do you believe I God? 你信仰上帝嗎？
live in Head teachers of boarding schools often have to live in. 寄宿學校的校長必須住宿在學校。
lie in On Sundays we always lie in. (*英國) 星期天我們經常睡懶覺。
settle in You must come and see us when we ehave settled in. 等我們安頓下來你一定要來看我們。
take in If the dress in too big, I’ll take it in. 如果裙子太大，我會做改小點。
call in The police were called in to deal with the murder.警察們被如今來偵破謀殺案。
在其他動詞和in組成的詞組里，動詞多少會超出其字面上的意思。
break in Burglars broke in while we were away. 我們不在的時候強盜破門而入。

還有一些動詞和in的詞組是慣用形式，意思遠離其原來的意思。
check in You change the money while I caeck in.我辦理入住手續(xù)時你換一下錢。
take in Don’t be taken in by his charm. 不要被他的魅力所欺騙。
butt in please don’t butt in while I’m speaking.我說話時別插嘴。
turn in It’s late, I’m going to turn in. 太晚了，我準備上床睡覺了。
give in I give in. What’s the answer?我放棄了。答案是什么？
count in It’s a good plan. Count me in.這是一個好計劃，算我一個。
be in What about oyu, Lan? Are you in or out ? 你呢， 蘭？你是加入還是不加入？
be in for We are in for a long fight.我們注定要經歷一場長期的斗爭。
Stand in for I stand in for the boss when he’s away.老板不在時我接替他的工作。
有的短語動詞里，in的意思非常特殊。例如，下例里就有“包圍；覆蓋垢意思：
You should fence in that field, roof in that courtyard and fill in that hole.
你應該在那片地的周圍上籬笆，給嬸子加上頂棚，把那個洞填上。
下面例子里的in是滿足要求的意思：

后接名詞的in 要直接跟在動詞的后面。
The fall resuited in her death.摔跤導致了她的死亡。
