VERBS ENDING IN ‘-IFY’  以-ify結尾的動詞

Verbs from Nouns and Back Again 名詞轉變成動詞，然后再轉變為名詞

有許多動詞是由名詞加-ify變來的：

terror"terrify  恐怖，驚駭"害怕，使驚駭    horror"horrify 恐怖，震驚"使恐懼，使驚懼

identity"identify  身份"確認，識別    electricity"electrify 電"使充電

在這些動詞后面加上-ication的話，又會變成別的名詞：identify"identification確認，識別"驗明，識別

electrify"eletrification 使充電"帶電  modify"modification更改"修改

unify"unification  統一"統一，一致  還有與上例相似，但又稍有不同的例子，如：

satisfy"satisfaction  滿足"滿意，滿足  例句：

the woman will have to identify the body. 這個婦女不得不去確認尸體。

The government plans to electrify all the main railway lines into the capital. 政府計劃給通往首都的主干線鐵路供電。

My mother fets a lot of satisfation from her garden. 我媽媽從料理花園中得到解決了很大的滿足。

Adectivces from Verbs  動詞轉變成形容詞

以-ify結尾的動詞，把y變成I,再加-ed,就會變成過去分詞：

terrify"terrified  恐懼"恐怖的   unify"unified統一"統一的  modify"modified  修改"修改過的

satisfy"satisfied  滿足"滿足的  這些過去分詞大多可以用形容詞：

The unified management structure is much  more tried to help the terrified children. 我們試圖去幫助受驚嚇的孩子們。

She is another satisfied customer. 她是另一個感到滿意的顧客。

 

COMPOUND VERBAL NOUNS  復合動名詞

我們已經學過動詞加-ing變成名詞的例子：

skate"skating 滑"滑冰    ride"riding 騎"騎  collect"collecting  收集"收集   climb"climbing爬"爬

這樣的名詞還可以用在其他名詞的后面，組成一個新的名詞：

ice skating 滑冰  horse riding 騎馬   stamp collecting  集郵  rock climbing 攀巖運動

例句：Ice skating is my favorite winter sport. 滑冰是我喜歡的冬季體育運動。
