美國是鐵路的故鄉(xiāng)，而美國，擁有世界第一的鐵路運營里程，有近30萬公里。芝加哥是美國最大的鐵路樞紐，是美國中北部30多條鐵路線的集結(jié)點，城市鐵路線總長1.24萬公里和年貨運量5.12億噸均居世界各大城市之首。

在美國，火車票也實行實名制，一般旅游者可以出示護照。也可以用信用卡在機器上買票。信用卡購票可以直接獲取買票人的信息。

美國很多火車站并沒有很寬敞的候車大廳，只是在整個大堂里隔出一片跟咖啡館大小一樣的地方，讓持票候車的所有乘客坐在一起，等待各自車次的廣播通知，然后跟著車站人員到特定電梯口下月臺。看來在美國坐火車跟在中國一樣只能坐指定車次。在歐洲，火車站大堂設有巨型顯示屏通報什么車往什么終點，在哪個月臺幾點開車。人們只要看準了就直接走到該月臺上車就是。如在英國和法國坐火車，似乎更方便，買了票，只要是哪個方向的車，都可以上，也不限指定車次，幾天內(nèi)乘坐都有效。
