源出法語成語tout autre chose(完全是另外一回事)，因此shoes(鞋子)可能是chose(動產(chǎn))的訛用。薩克雷在一八五九年首先使用這條成語。

【例】that’s another pair of shoes.那是另外一回事了。

Applaud one to the echo大聲喝彩，掌聲雷動

源出莎士比亞《麥克佩斯》第五幕第三場：“我一定要使太空之中充滿著我對你的贊美的回聲。”（I would applaud thee to the very echo, that should applaud again.）有時也用cheer 代替applaud.

[例]when he had finished his speech, his audience cheered him to the echo.他的演說一結(jié)束，聽眾就向他大聲喝彩。

The apple of discord禍根，爭端

希臘神話中有這樣一段故事：西迪斯和佩琉斯結(jié)婚時未邀請女神埃利斯，埃利斯就在舉行婚禮時在諸神和女神之間投擲金蘋果而引起爭奪。于是，間接引起特洛伊戰(zhàn)爭。

【例】she is the apple of discord wherever she appears.不論到什么地方，她都成為禍根。

The apple of one’s eye 掌上明珠，珍愛的人（或物）

這里的apple是指瞳孔，是眼睛里最敏感最珍貴的部分。這條成語來自《圣經(jīng)。詩篇》第十七章第八節(jié)：“求你保護(hù)我，如同保護(hù)眼中的瞳孔。”（keep me as the apple of the eye.）

[例] the little girl was the apple of her grandparent’s eye.這個小女孩是她的祖父母的掌上明珠。

Apirl fool 傻瓜

原指愚人節(jié)中受愚弄的人，現(xiàn)泛指任何被愚弄的人。

【例】don’t listen to him. He’s going to make an april fool of you.別聽他的，他要你當(dāng)傻瓜哩。
