to do someone’s heart good 使某人高興
中文里常說“對……有益處”,英文中也有相似的的說法:do…good(=do good to…)。而英文的do someone’s heart good(對某人的心有益處),則是“使某人高興的意思。
★ It does Amy’s heart good to see her grandchildren so healthy and happy.
看到孫兒信如此健康快樂,艾美感到很高興。
★ It did my heart good to hear how successful you’ve become.
聽到你這么成功,我很高興。
Not have the heart (to do something)
(因為心地善良而)不忍心做(某事)
前面提過,the heart代表“心地‘,尤其是”善良的民地“。因為心地善良,而不忍心去做某事,英文里就稱之為not have the heart (to do something).
★ The boy was so downcast at having broken the window that his teacher didn’t have the heart to punish him.
這男孩子因為打破窗戶而非常自責,以致于老師不忍心懲罰他。
★ How could you have ever had the heart to do such a cruel things?
這么殘忍的事你怎么忍心去做呢?
To lose heart 泄氣
人生不如意事十之八九,一般人遇到不如意的事,難免感到泄氣。中文里的“泄氣”,英文則會用lose heart來表達。
★ I know it’s difficult to fie a job now, but don’t lose heart.
你知道現在很難找到工作,但別泄氣啊!
★ After 24 hours had passed and there was still no news of the missing plane, we began to lose heart.
飛機在失蹤二十四小時后仍無任何消息,我們開始感到泄氣。
To take heart感受鼓勵
Take heart 與lose heart(泄氣)的意義相反,表示“感受鼓勵,產生勇氣”的意思。
★ Small businesses should take heart at the government’s tax relief plan.
小企業議論地因政府的減稅方案而受到激勵。
★ I had been worried about failing English, but I took heart at my teacher’s words of encouragement.
我原先擔心英文會不及格,但聽了老師鼓勵的話之后就產生了勇氣。
to lose ones’ heart to somebody/something愛上某人/某物
lose ones’ heart to somebody/something字面上是“把你自己的心輸給某人或某物”,意思就是“愛上某人”或“喜愛某物”,與泄氣無關。
★ Lucy has lost her heart to a billionaire much older than her.
露西愛上一個年紀比她大很多的億萬富翁。
★ Todd lost his heart to photography since he was a student.
托德在學生時代就愛上了攝影。
