man to man 開誠布公
人與人之間的溝通，看似簡單，其實不容易，惟在“男子漢對男子漢（man to man）時，比較能夠“坦誠以對”，“開誠布公”。
★ Man to man, I think you should admit your mistakes.
坦白說，我認為你應該承認自己的錯誤。
★ If we don’t agree to talk man to man, the whole meeting will have been wasted.
如果我們彼此不能開誠布公地談，整個會議就都白白浪費了。
the next man任何一個人
學生時代，英文老師有時會請班上的同學起來做文法習題，一個同學做完習題后，老師要叫“下一位同學”起來接著做時，常說一聲：Ｎext!。這句Next 的意思就是 The next student!。這句的the next man就等于“下一位”。“下一位”是哪一位呢？就是“我們周遭的任何一個人(anybody else) 的意思。如果說話的人是女性，則改為the next woman.
★ I am as glad as the next man to get something tree.
我跟任何人一樣，都很樂意接受免費的東西。
★ I am as patriotic as the next man.
我和任何一個人都一樣愛國。
the old man老爸、主管
膝下猻成群，或者在公司機構擔任主管職位的男性，通常年齡一定不小，中文常稱之為“老頭子”，英文里則用the old man來代表家里的“老爸”或公司里的“主管”。但別記忘了，你可不能當著主管或老爸的面喊“老頭子”呢！
★ It’s nice to treat the old man to something different for dinner when he gets home after a long day.
老爸上了一整天的班回來，晚餐該讓他吃點不一樣的東西。
★ We waited for 30 minutes outside his office until the old man had time to see us.
我們在主管的辦公室的外面等了半個鐘頭才見到他。
Every man for himself各自逃命
地震、臺風等天災降臨時，每個人都要只能照顧自己，哪有時間去管別人？這種各自逃命的情況，英文里稱作every man for himself.
★ At time of a great natural calamity like a great earthquake, people just act according to their instincts and it’s every man for himself.
像大地震那樣的大天災發生時，人們只有憑本能各自照顧自己逃命了。
As one man全體一起
讀小學、中學時，老師一進教室，班長會喊“起立！”，然后再喊“敬禮！”，全班學生就“好像一個人似的”(as one man)全體一起向老師致敬，然后再一聲
|坐下！“，大家才坐下來上課。那種井然有序的上課情況，似乎到了大專院校就不復見。
★ The member of the basketball team came forward as one man to welcome their new coach.
全體籃球隊員一起走到前面來迎接他們的新教練。
★ All the people got up as one man to show their respect.
全場的人都一起站起來表示尊敬。
to be one’s own man自己做主
在英文里，be one’s own man（自己做主）相當于be one’s own master9作自己的老板，也就是“自己擁有自主權”的意思。
★ Clearly Neil relishes the freedom, the life, the business of being his own man.
很明顯的，尼爾很喜歡這種自己做主的自由、生活和事業。
★ His expression hardened at the thought of working for somebody else, of no longer being his own master.
想到再也不能自己當老板而要去替別人工作時，他的表情僵了。
