girl Friday 忠實可靠（不可或缺）的女助理
girl Friday望文生義是“名為星期五的女孩”(a girl called Friday), 這個典故出自《魯賓遜漂流記》中名為Friday(星期五)忠心耿耿的仆人。隨著該書的風行全球，有人開始以man/servant as faithful as Friday), 進而再引申出女傭人的說法。Girl Friday的復數是girl Fridays, 而man Friday的復數可以說成men Friday。
★ This is Mary, my girl Friday. My office couldn’t function without her.
這位是我的女助理瑪麗，我的辦公室沒有她就無法運作。
★ John started as a mere floor sweeper, but within ten years he had risen to the position of man Friday to the president.

a girl of the town鎮上女郎
英文里將“衣著入時但整天無所事事的人”稱為a man about town。而如《麻雀變鳳凰》等電影畫面中在街上閑蕩的女性就是“鎮上女郎”（a girl of the town）。
講得露骨一點就是“阻街女郎”（a woman of the street/a streetwalker）。這些從事性交易的女性在街上閑逛的目的是尋找顧客，也可用“娼妓”(prostitute)來形容她們。
