at the end of the day按字面意思理解就是“在一天結束之時”。比如：

At the end of the day, I just want to go home and have a good sleep.(忙碌了一整天之后，我只想回家好好睡一覺。)

  近幾年來，這個短語在美國的使用頻率直線上升，同時它的意思也發生民明顯的變化。day 不再單指某一天，而是泛指任何事，所以at the end of the day相當于at the end of (anything and everything)。換成通俗有表達式就是in the end 或after all is said and done,也就是中文里常用的“說到底，說穿了”。比如：

  Don’t be too hard on yourself. At the end of the day, you are just human and you can’t always be perfect.（別對自己太過苛求了。說到底，你只是個普通人，不可能永遠不犯錯。）

  I don’t really wish to earn a whole lot of money, I just wanna be healthy, At the end of the day ,that’s what really matters.（我并不希望賺大錢。我只希望身體健康。說到底，這才是真正重要的。）

粗略估計一下，十個人說at the end of the day,只有一個是真正表示“在一天結束的時候”， 剩下九個都是“說到底”的意思。正是由于這種引申義用得太多，很多英語為母語者對at the end of the day 產生了反感情緒。Plain English（一個關注英語用法變化的民間組織，其總部設在英國）在2004年曾經作過調查，at the end of the day以絕對領先的票數獲得了“最令人厭煩的調查，at the end of the day已經“到底”，那week, month和year往哪里擺？
