‘FORGET’, REMEMBER’, REGRET’ + AN INFINITIVE OR AN ‘-ING’ FORM
forget, remember, regret +不定式/-ing形式
forget, remember, regret這些動詞的后面在接不定式和-ing形式的時候意思有一些不同。我們來看一下不同的用法：
I forgot to meet Jane at the airport.我忘了去機場接簡。（沒有去機場）
I’ll never forget meeting Jane.我決不會忘記跟簡的見面。
VERBS FOLLOWED BY A ‘THAT’ CLAUSE 動詞+that從句
有的動詞后面既不能接to 不琮式也不能接-ing形式，比如說know, think, say 等。這種動詞的后面我們使用由that引導的從句：
He thinks that he will win tonight.
He knows that he can win tonight.
He says that he can win tonight.
MULTL-WORD VERBS:WITH’UP’ AND ‘DOWN’ up 和down的短語動詞
我們已經(jīng)在前面單元中學習了up和它的反義詞down的基本意思，既表示空間的意思， 以及其引申含義，體現(xiàn)在關于量、價格、壓力等上下方向的變化等時候。
我們再來學習這兩個單詞的一些其他比喻用法。上下垂直運動的概念還有保留，但是表現(xiàn)的并不是某個上下移動的事物。
競爭：
England are two goals up/down. 英格蘭隊得了兩分、丟了兩分。
Try to keep with the leaders. 努力跟上領導的步伐。
感情：
Calm down.冷靜！
Keep your sprits up. 保持你的情緒高漲。
This job is getting me down.這個工作快讓我崩潰了。
警告：
Wake Up! 醒醒！
Brighten up! 高興點！
并不只是up以及down的意思有引申，作為短評動詞的整體的意義也引申了。我們用■來表示up和down的基本意思，用□來表示它們各自的比喻意義：
■Ivy grows up walls.常春藤順著墻生長。
□The children are growing up. 孩子們正在長大。
★指精神上的成長而不是身體上的成長時，grow up就有比喻之意了。
■From the top, we looked down on the city.我們在山頂上鳥瞰整個城市。
□He looks down on poor people.他瞧不起窮人。
■Stand up when she comes in.她進來時大家要站起來。
□You must stand up for what is right. 你必須支持正確的一方。
也有像turn down（拒絕）， bring up（養(yǎng)育孩子）這種固定的短語動詞。up或者down在這里的意思被擴大使用了。
I asked them for a job, but they turmed me down. 我向他們要一份工作，但是他們拒絕了我。
We brought up pur children in the country. 我們在鄉(xiāng)村把孩子養(yǎng)大。
像put up 或者give up 這種已經(jīng)成了慣用語的表達就只有直接記住了。
I can put you up when you come to London.你到倫敦的時候我可以提供你住宿。
I can’t walk any further. I’m going to give up. 我不能再走了， 我要放棄。
up也有與表示空間的意思完全沒有關系的其他意思。在這個意思上使用的up表示動作，內(nèi)容等完全、徹底：
Every winter the river freezes up. 每個冬天河流都結冰。
Tie up your shoes.系緊你的鞋帶。
I’m closing up the house for the winter.我們正在為冬天的到來而修理房屋。
Drink up your beer. 把你的啤酒喝光。
I must tidy up the bedroom.我必須整理臥室。
down還有兩個很特別的意思。首先是像下面的例句那樣表示“寫下來，記焉的意思：
Write down everything the teacher says. 把老師寫的東西都記下來。
接下來就是表示將某個東西“牢牢固定”的意思：
We need to tie everything down because of the wind.因為有風我們要把所有的東西都系緊。
