美國的餐館可分為三種：
1.自助餐館，自助餐館的食物琳瑯滿目，冷熱皆備。顧客可到柜臺前隨意拿取，且食品價格較便宜，不必付小費。
2.正式餐館，其規格大小不一。小餐館價格低廉，服務質量較低；大餐館富麗堂皇，顧客所需應有盡有。大多數正式餐館都有點菜、全餐和特餐之分。點菜的分類食品有魚類、肉類、色拉、蛋類等，顧客可任意點叫。全餐分為開胃食品、主菜、蔬菜、甜品心和飲料，也任客選用。特餐是指每天的份飯，包括用肉或魚做的一道菜，另交蔬菜、色拉、面包和奶油。其中點菜最貴，特餐最廉。在正式餐館中就餐要給小費，數額約為餐費的15%。
3.快餐店、小吃店、熟食店和午餐室。大城市里到處都有大眾化的快餐店，售賣法式炸土豆、意大利餡餅、漢堡包、炸魚三明治、烤牛肉三明治等。熟食店出售既快捷又實惠的午餐，通常備有多種三明治和色拉，在店里吃要給小費。午餐室一般設在車站或商店里，出售早餐、簡便的午餐和快餐。午餐室食品種類多，服務速度快，十分經濟，它是趕路者經常關顧的地方。就餐后應在柜臺上留下小費。
